DOCUMENTING EVERYTHING: YOUR JOURNAL IS YOUR LOGBOOK
by Stephen Earley Jordan, II
Category: General - http://www.wordpreneur.com/general
Sailors had it for years. Great explorers had it as well.
If you go on an expedition to an ancient Aztec mound, more
than likely the archaeologist will have one too - so, why
shouldn't you own one?
No, I'm not speaking of the scurvy that plagued the
sailors! No, I'm not speaking of the Loch Ness Monster or
Bigfoot, whom explorers claimed to have seen in snowy
Manitoba winters. Nor am I speaking of a lost city, which
was never truly lost, but simply buried under mounds of
earth and recently dug up by an archaeologist.
I'm speaking of journals. Journals? Yes! Keeping a journal
can be just as much of an adventure as sailing the high
seas, exploring unknown Canadian wilderness or digging in
the dirt to find buried treasure.
Journals have been a source of reflection for centuries. My
suggestion is to look at your writing career as if you're
an explorer analyzing new-found land; an archaeologist
digging up new artifacts and renaming them and so on...
How can you do this? Well, view your journal as a logbook
and document your daily happenings. Here is a suggested
format for keeping your captain's log.

WRITE STRATEGY: THINK, BELIEVE, ATTACK
by Shery Ma Belle Arrieta-Russ
Category: Motivation - http://www.wordpreneur.com/motivation
Think of writing like karate... it's about DISCIPLINE.
Writing, like other forms of art, work or talent, requires
discipline. It won't ever be enough that you say to
yourself that you are a writer. Only when you write and
write with discipline can you call yourself one. Before you
can earn a black belt in karate, you have to dedicate
yourself, practice and instill discipline in yourself to
learn the moves and techniques.
The same goes for writing. Don't just read books. Devour
them. Ray Bradbury, author of "Zen in the Art of Writing,"
suggests books of essays, poetry, short stories, novels and
even comic strips. Not only does he suggest that you read
authors who write the way you hope to write, but "also read
those who do not think as you think or write as you want to
write, and so be stimulated in directions you might not
take for many years." He continues, "don't let the snobbery
of others prevent you from reading Kipling, say, while no
one else is reading him."
Learn to differentiate between good writing and bad
writing. Make time to write. Write even though you're in a
bad mood. Put yourself in a routine. Integrate writing into
your life. The goal is not to make writing dominate your
life, but to make it fit in your life. Julia Cameron, in
her book The Right to Write, sums it best: "Rather than
being a private affair cordoned off from life as the rest
of the world lives it, writing might profitably be seen as
an activity best embedded in life, not divorced from it."
Believe that EVERYONE HAS A STORY - including you.

HOW TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL FREELANCE CAREER
by Yuwanda Black
Category: The Job - http://www.wordpreneur.com/thejob
[ED. NOTE: Although we don't agree with everything she says
- a minimum 3-years of experience requirement is way too
much - the author does provide excellent, solid advice.]
In the current job market, many editorial workers have
turned to freelancing as a matter of survival. I receive
many queries from applicants regarding how to go about
freelancing.
First I will address what, in my opinion, is the single
most important asset you need to build a successful
freelance career. Then I will outline other necessities.
Experience
You need a minimum of three years (five is ideal),
preferably as a full-time employee. Clients will feel more
comfortable in your knowledge and abilities if you can
demonstrate that you've performed your duties in the past,
full-time, at an established institution.
Each industry has its own "lingo". Experience in an
industry allows you to understand it and communicate
effectively with your clients. As a proofreader, a
potential client [e.g., a reference book publisher] might
say:
