INTERVIEWING AN AUTHOR: DON'T BE LEFT SPEECHLESS
by Stephen Earley Jordan
Category: Technique http://www.wordpreneur.com/technique
[ED. NOTE: Many of these tips are good for ALL interview
subjects, not just authors!]
Joyce Carol Oates. Langston Hughes. Anne Sexton. F. Scott
Fitzgerald. Nikki Giovanni. The names of authors (dead and
alive) can go on and on. But I’ll let you have first pick!
You are in a room with some of your favorite authors. About
ten of them. However, you are only allowed to invite one of
them to Starbucks for a couple of chocolate mochas. Just
you and your favorite author. It doesn’t matter if the
writer is deceased - use your imagination! After all,
you’re a writer, right?
Oh dear, who shall it be? Should it be William Shakespeare
with his purple pantaloons; Sylvia Plath who now vows to
use an electric oven instead of gas; or should it be Maya
Angelou and old playmates from her broken-hearted brothel?
Finally, you have selected an author.
You take him (or her) to Starbucks. You order the mochas.
You sit down. As you open your mouth to ask the author
questions nothing useful comes out.
What’s the problem?

TOP 7 ESSENTIAL "HOT-SELLING POINTS" TO IMPLEMENT
BEFORE WRITING CHAPTER ONE
by Judy Cullins
Category: Technique http://www.wordpreneur.com/technique
Every part of your book can be a sales tool. When you
include the below tips, you will have a roadmap to follow
to keep your writing organized and compelling, and you'll
sell more books than you ever dreamed of!
1. Write for your one preferred audience. Not everyone
wants your book. Find out what audience wants/needs your
book? What problems does your book solve for them? Create
an audience profile and keep your audience's picture in
front of you as you write. Ask yourself, is my topic narrow
enough? The Chicken Soup For The Teenager, For The
Prisoner, and other specific groups sold far more copies
than the original Chicken Soup.
2. Write a sizzling book title and front cover. You have
4-10 seconds to hook your potential buyer. The cover itself
sells more books than any other part. Bookstore buyers buy
mainly by cover designs. Your title must compel your
audience to buy. If you want an agent or publisher your
title and subtitle are vital.
