HOW TO HAVE AN EFFECTIVE WRITING GROUP
by Stephen Earley Jordan, II
Category: General
The works you’ve written are numerous, ranging from short
stories to even the novel, hidden in a storage bin (under
the bed) collecting dust. But there comes a time when you
must wipe away that dust, regain your pride, and prepare
your babies for publication! But, how do you get such a
critical, unbiased eye to analyze your works, offering both
praise and criticism?
It’s simple - start a writing group!
Creating a writing group is the easy part, but creating a
functioning and beneficial writing group can be quite a
task.
Writing groups are age-old sessions where writers obtain
helpful evaluations for their works. Nowadays, though,
writing groups seem to be a fad, and for many a status
symbol reassuring them of their writerdom. Don’t create a
writing group simply for the sake of saying, "I belong to a
writing group." Create or join a group because of the
numerous benefits that come along with them.

HOW TO PITCH A STORY
by Elizabeth Kirwin
Category: Promotion
Ever wonder why we refer to convincing an editor a story is
worthy by "pitching a story?" I have. I’m a baseball
enthusiast, and it makes a lot of sense to me. When the
editor is at bat with you, he or she has a few swings to
make before making a connection - through the story idea
(ball) that could end up being a base hit or a home run.
Naturally, everyone wants to hit a home run when they go to
bat with an editor. Sometimes publicists and writers do
have to walk to first base for the story assignment. Here
are some helpful tips on how to pitch a story to an editor
- and how to at least hit a single, double, or triple - if
not a home run on occasion.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A FREELANCER? HERE'S HOW!
by Vishal P. Rao
Category: The Job
Not that long ago, freelancing was something people did
mainly in larger metropolitan areas where work for writers,
artists, and other creative types was plentiful and easily
accessible. Today, however, the freelance landscape has
dramatically changed.
For one, you can live practically anywhere in the world and
still be able to maintain a successful freelance career.
Not to mention that the creative fields aren't the only
areas where freelancing is popular any more.
Today, accountants, trainers, computer technicians, etc.
are all able to earn a living as freelancers. Regardless of
the freelancing field you are interested in, there are some
important things you should know that will help you get
started and get successful.
Before we discuss those, however, we need to talk briefly
about the pros and the cons of being a freelancer. You need
to know both sides before you make your decision so you
truly understand what you're getting into.
