HOW TO PROMOTE A BOOK
by Nithya K
Category: Promotion
Nowadays it’s no longer a matter of whether or not an
author should promote his or her book, but how aggressively
one should go about it. The sad truth is that publishers
often fail to promote books, and if we, the authors, don't
promote our own books then they may be destined to a
lifespan between that of butter and yogurt, to paraphrase
Calvin Trillan. The author's extra efforts may make all the
difference between a book becoming a long-lived seller, and
being recycled so that some other author can take advantage
of the paper.
What to do then? One cannot concoct a general rule for
promoting books. This method obviously has drawbacks,
because every book is different and requires its own
special approach. So, the primary thing to do is consider
your target audience.

TO OUTLINE OR NOT TO OUTLINE
by Mallory York
Category: Techniques
Ah, the age-old writer's debate - to outline or not to
outline?
Outlines have proven quite effective for a lot of writers,
and many of the famous stories we know and love - such as
Star Wars - were outlined before they were fleshed out into
a living, breathing story. (Well, metaphorically living and
breathing, anyway.)
But many of the stories that touched us most - like real-
life experiences - simply happened, no outlining was
needed. Some stories just come to you, while others need
some refining before they're ready to be written. The
question is, which one works best for you?

WRITING FROM HOME: IT CAN BE GREAT AND
NOT SO GREAT FOR MOTHERS
by Sarah Smiley
Category: The Job
I went to school to be a teacher. In fact, I have a B.S. in
Education, not journalism.
Due to the hours and holidays, teaching is traditionally
thought to be the best work for a mother who wants to keep
one foot in the mommy-door and one foot in the career-door.
This thought, paired with my love for children and
learning, led me to life inside the schoolhouse doors.
Soon though, writing, not teaching, became my real "full
time job," and it's been years since I set foot behind a
teacher's podium.
