Not long ago I was having dinner with a high school acquaintance who works for the local electric company. I joked that I hadn’t paid for electricity in years. The article’s a bit rough, but the info’s good. Obviously good cover design is critical. And for free ebooks usually distributed for “viral” purposes and/or to help stimulate sales, internal design and layout is critical as well. But for ebooks you sell? The customer won’t get to look “inside” until s/he’s already paid you. Ergo, the customer’s already converted (past tense). Yeah, academic, but if you’re flying solo, this realization may help you focus scarce resources appropriately to get your product out there quicker and cheaper. Besides, for digital infoproducts, who said you couldn’t tweak the internals as needed? That’s my tip for the day: Focus on the criticals, fulfill the basics adequately but work at getting the product out and selling fast, then tweak as you go along. — EES

I’ve been messing around with ebooks for who knows how long. Most certainly since before the Web. From massive plain text files disseminated on BBSs (bulletin board systems) to DOS executables to even Windows Help files, I just had fun futzing around with all that “new media” stuff back then. Fun, yeah, but if a writer friend asked me whether ebooks were worth publishing in a business sense, it was plainly obvious they were no go’s.
