Thoughts on Investing in Your Own Writer’s Website

AccountingMaybe it’s just me, but this time of the year I spend more energy than usual thinking of money, finances, numbers, business, blah blah blah. Watch it creep into all my posts.

Take this one on writer’s websites, in response to the usual newbie question (let’s pretend that’s you) on whether one should invest in a website or not.

No brainer? Well, since the assumption is that you’re a writing industry newb, you won’t have any clips yet. So, should you spend money on a website/Web hosting?

Freeware Text Editors

For a lot of writing and notetaking and other utilitarian tasks (such as keeping simple databases/lists and “Internet age” duties like editing HTML and other source code), I prefer using a good old text editor. LIke Windows NotePad.

One Reason Why a Laptop is Now My Workhorse

I may have already mentioned in passing that my main desktop PC in my basement home office, a form that has served me very well as my main work PC in all the years prior, now serves predominantly utilitarian duties while I clickety-clack away on my “new” laptop upstairs.

Picking up where we left off in Blog “Income” From Donations can be Substantial, here’s a dirt-easy (and free) solution for you WordPress users: Go get the Buy Me a Beer PayPal Donation plugin like I did.

In a nutshell, it lets your WordPress blog’s visitors send you monetary donations via PayPal. The plugin automates the whole process enough to make it as much a no-brainer as possible.

How to Safely Modify WordPress Theme (and Other) Source Code (Part 2 of 2)

As a working example, let’s actually try to modify a WordPress theme a bit and see if we can tweak it to look more to our satisfaction.

If you’ll remember, my favorite WordPress theme is Kubrick, but its justified bodies of text is not to my liking. So, let’s change that and make those bodies left-justified.

As I’ve been wading knee-deep in help wanted ads and announcements for writers and editors to see how best to package and present this info here, it’s become plainly obvious how easy it is for spammers to harvest email addresses — many ads use (from the looks of it) someone’s real everyday use email address as a contact method.

Many of you do that too on your sites and blogs. And you all wonder why you get so much spam.
