Some Freelancers Make Me Shake My Head in Disbelief

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 |

Anyone else out there besides me who feels there’s just something so, well, wrong with this piece? I’ll just bite my tongue for now and wait for any comments from you guys. I was going to edit and clean it up, but what the hey, I’ll let you read it in its original glory. (Speak up too if you agree with her!) — EES

Article by Marsha Maung

What happens when you love to travel, get to travel for work and yet you harbor dreams of being a freelance writer? Well, maybe you have flair when it comes to writing. Perhaps your family and friends or colleagues have always piled praises on how well you can express yourself with written words. I am pretty sure you would have started wondering if you could actually pursue a career or alternative career as a travel freelance writer.

You Can Make Money Writing!

Sunday, August 17th, 2008 |

The headline’s not a revelation. Then again, I don’t think we’re really supposed to be the target readers. Or maybe we are… it’s an interesting enough read, and quite informative actually, which is why I’ve posted it. Decent book and site recommendations for writers, newbie or otherwise. Check them out! Seriously, it’s here for the resources mentioned; although the article is a quick, pleasant enough read, judging from the bio, I seriously doubt this “Kristi Ambrose” even exists and is just a pseudonym for an “Internet Marketer” using article marketing techniques. Not uncommon. — EES

Do You Know How to Write? If So, You Could Actually Make Money From It!
Article by Kristi Ambrose

Tons upon tons of people claim that they can write, but then you read their stuff and its either unneeded fluff or it just sounds like they have no idea what they are talking about! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not perfect by far. In fact, I’ve gotten reamed for forgetting apostrophes, or spelling words wrong! Just yesterday someone got mad at me on MySpace (of all places) because on my profile I put “thats” instead of “that’s.” Which is really important ya know? Because MySpace is so very important!

Why Aren’t You a Freelance Writer Yet?

Another good, short article from Ms. Black. Of the three “excuses,” the one I hear most often is the third one. — EES

What’s Stopping You From Starting a Freelance Writing Business?
Article by Yuwanda Black

One of the best times to start a freelance writing business is when you’re not ready to. And, while this may seem like an oxymoronic statement, it’s not.

Many freelance writers use some or all of the following reasons to delay their freelance writing dreams. Which one is your freelance writing dream snatcher?

Elance vs. Guru

Thursday, August 14th, 2008 |

Here’s a short but intriguingly informative article. I’ve never really heard these sites called “freelance writing auction websites” before. Makes the little gears in my head start vibrating. Elance and Guru aren’t really “auction” sites anyway, which is probably why I’ve never personally called them that — underbidding everybody doesn’t necessarily mean you get the job (but there’s a good chance it’ll help, of course). I’ve used Elance a number of times to hire folks, and I can tell you that there are lots of lowballers… and I didn’t hire a single one of them. I’m sure I’m not alone. — EES

How to Use Search Engines to Find Freelance Writing Jobs for Free

Monday, August 4th, 2008 |

The title of this article, although it catches our interest considering who we are, I didn’t think was anything special. It just gives off that been-there-done-that aura, or in this case, seen-it-read-it. So I wasn’t expecting much. But by the second paragraph, I realized that Ferrall had something here you may just want to read. And try.

This actually may be a decent example of the difference a title makes. Check his right below, and check mine for this post above.— EES

Are You Good Enough to Be a Freelance Writer?

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 |

I don’t know what it is, but if asked to write a description of an acquaintance who’s a “writer-type,” the very first paragraph will more often than not probably include, “high level of self-doubt.” And then there’s that fear of rejection thing, but that’s for another post.

Since we don’t usually have to look very far to find real world examples of writing that’s not only very bad, but very likely also paid for, the answer is clearly, “Heck yeah, you can be a freelance writer.” Here, pro freelancer Yuwanda Black (I really like her stuff) says so too… and gives you a few more useful tips besides. — EES

Establish a “Looking for Freelance Work” Routine

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 |

I can tell you from experience that not establishing a routine for continuously seeking freelance work and promoting your services and availability is probably the biggest mistake the newbie freelance writer can make.

Scrambling at the last minute, trying to line up more work when your well just dried up is, quite frankly, silly. And yet there’s no shortage of folks I know who do just that (the very same people, by the way, who’re the most vocal about the market being ”tough”). If that’s your MO or strategy, I sure do hope you’ve learned how to make do with less.

Thursday, May 15th, 2008 |

I periodically take stock of what we’ve got here on Wordpreneur, and I just realized something: We don’t have a Freelancing category. Huh? Strange. There’s obviously no shortage of that kind of content here. Don’t ask me what I was thinking.
