Monday, November 5th, 2007 |

The Editor's Introductory Guide to Blogging ProfitIn the first installment of this guide (which has proven to be Wordpreneur’s most popular post to date), we pretty much just went through the basic start-up and operations formula for editors — not necessarily writers — to get into the online publishing game on a blog platform.

As promised, now we get into the good old “how to bring money in” part of it.

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007 |

OK, that makes four, or about a month of these Carnival issues, and traffic numbers (interest) seem high enough, even for these usually sickly low Saturdays. So, let’s keep going then, shall we?

Quick Thoughts on Digital Infoproduct Pricing

Friday, November 2nd, 2007 |

Product PricingPricing is an art. Period. Science? Yeah, right.

Having said that, there are a number of scientific-ish bits of wisdom bandied about by the been-there-done-that’s that help keep us from going bonkers trying to figure all this out.

The Editor’s Introductory Guide to Blogging Profits

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 |

Blog StuffA “blog,” as you all know, stands for Web log, At its core and most basic, a diary, in case anyone’s asking. But just like everything else in this world, it’s morphed into something else that people need, in this case a very powerful but yet relatively easy to implement — but more importantly, easy to comprehend — online publishing solution.

Which means that never before has it been easier (and I do mean that quite sincerely) for editors to get into publishing online without doing much in the way of creating new content. Through the use of all this new-ish blogging tech and other resources available today, in other words, it’s now relatively simple for a solitary editor to become a productive (and profitable) publisher.

No Clips? No Problem

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 |

When trying to sell your writing services, at some point your prospect is going to ask you for “clips” or samples of your work to back up your claim that you not only can indeed write, but write well enough to get paid for it.

If you’re new to the game, you probably don’t have any. Not to worry — we all started somewhere, didn’t we?

Dumb Mistake… Fixed

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 |

I was on the golf course the other day — fortunately enough a place I’ve been able to frequent the occasional weekday on top of my usual weekenders — and I was doubly fortunate to be put in a foursome that included a very pleasant married couple. Funny conversationalists with adequate game, it made for a nice few hours.

It also didn’t hurt at all that the guy, it turned out, owned and ran a successful local business. But even better: He seemed genuinely interested in hearing about what I did, and learning more about my services, particularly the ones that revolved around developing and running a blog.

Discounting Larger Units of Time

Thursday, October 4th, 2007 |

With all this talk about hourly rates, I wouldn’t be surprised if you overlooked the fact that you can negotiate freelance jobs that are based on larger units or blocks of your time… such as daily, weekly, or more.

What to Charge: The “Profit Goal” Formula

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 |

This is actually the formula I prefer to use. It’s simple, and based predominantly on an even simpler goal: how much money you want left in your pocket (profit) at the end of the year.

You’ll find that having a numbers goal is a motivationally helpful tool to boot.

What to Charge: Consider Multiple Billing Rates

Friday, September 28th, 2007 |

Is it really fair to just have one hourly rate? After all, I would imagine that you’d be measurably more productive writing on a subject you’re an expect on as opposed to the very same hour spent struggling with something you know very little about.

Which is why some writers have adopted multiple billing rates.
