IdeasIDEA: Site Devoted to Unusual Theme “Hacking”

Hacking or being a hacker isn’t really a bad thing, regardless of what the geniuses in the movie industry and general media have mucked it up to be. But still, over the years, hacking has come to mean many different things (usually black hat); for our purposes, however, we’re sticking with its original, pure definition — hacking is figuring out new and ingenious ways to use something.

And not just computers. Anything.

Quick and Dirty Affiliate Program Tests (2 of 5)

PREVIOUSLY: Intro - Make a Purchase

BusinessTest #2: Who’s Running the Show? (Network vs. In-House)

Some programs are run independently, in-house so to speak, by their owners. This simply means they’re in charge of and responsible for everything: providing you with support/services; tracking your transactions; paying you, etc. There’s no shortage of examples of these independent in-house programs.

Many others join and rely on an affiliate network — a service they pay to manage all that good stuff — while the merchants themselves focus on, well, running their businesses (presumably what they know how to do instead of futzing around in unfamiliar territory). Three well known networks are Commission Junction, LinkShare and Shareasale.

Quick and Dirty Affiliate Program Tests (1 of 5)

Monday, March 17th, 2008 |

BusinessThe online business system of promoting external products and services as an affiliate to help monetize our blogs and sites has been around for a while… over a decade, actually. Considering the relative maturity of a business model where advertisers and companies pay third party publishers (us) for traffic, referrals and sales, should we still bother, then, to test the legitimacy of an affiliate program before devoting resources to promoting it on our blogs/sites?

You betcha.

Live Blogging Tips

Monday, February 4th, 2008 |

Blog StuffI have no need for these now and in the foreseeable future, but maybe you do.

Search marketing expert Lee Odden has successfully done a bit of “conference blogging” (if 14 in 2007 is just ”a bit”). As he puts it so succinctly:

“[W]e’ve learned a thing or two about live blogging at conferences.”

Wordpreneur Carnival #010

Sunday, December 16th, 2007 |

Winter’s Here!Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet? Or mailing out your cards? I haven’t, and this is the last good weekend to do that. Next weekend is for bringing out the popcorn and sitting back to watch, laugh and point at the nimrods who waited too long.

The shopping part I easily handle through the gang at Amazon — I just let them deal with the logistics and hassle of getting the gifts into the recipients’ hands (and for those gifts I deliver myself, it’s the last weekend to take advantage of free Super Saver shipping). The greeting cards are a different story… getting those done and out is still roll up your sleeves work. Oh well.

Wordpreneur Carnival #008

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007 |

Sorry for the slight delay getting this edition out folks… spent the last couple of days writing — the type that gets me pretty much oblivious to everything going on around me — but fortunately I snapped out of it enough this morning to finish and get this installment out. Enjoy!

By the way, I’m wondering: Would you prefer that I release these carnival issues on Sundays instead of their regular Saturdays? The benefit from the change would mainly be for the subscribers of the email feed, who’ll then get their email notifications on Monday instead of Sunday. Thoughts?
