Adobe Reader & Acrobat Vulnerable: Disable JavaScript Now!
According to a report I read on ZDNet today, Adobe has confirmed that it’s ubiquitous Adobe PDF Reader and Acrobat 9.2 and earlier software are vulnerable to exploitation from malicious hackers who can “hijack data from compromised computers.”
This is not a drill.

There is a fix: Disable JavaScript in your copy of Reader or Acrobat. For now, anyway, until Adobe gets its act together and issues a patch or update. The quick how-to:
- Go to Edit > Preferences > JavaScript
- Deselect Enable Acrobat JavaScript
You can, of course, simply stop using Adobe PDF Reader until it’s all patched up or updated, and use one of the alternative PDF readers listed on PDFreaders.org in the meantime. (The JS fix above is easy, though.)

FYI, on Mac OSX, it’s
1. Go to Adobe Reader > Preferences > JavaScript
2. (Same as article)

Thanks for the info, William. I wouldn’t know if the Mac versions are vulnerable to the zero-day thing as well. Are they?
I don’t know whether or not Mac is vulnerable to the exploit. Adobe is cross-platform, so it might be.
JavaScript is something I don’t need in my ebook reader, so I turned it off. Suggest doing the same to other Mac users until the fixed version of Adobe is available. Then, turn JavaScript back on only if it’s needed.
