Not long ago I was having dinner with a high school acquaintance who works for the local electric company. I joked that I hadn’t paid for electricity in years. I explained that sales of an eBook that I was marketing to people who had hemorrhoid discomfort covered the cost of my electric bill every month. When I first got started, I found that I could motivate myself by thinking of bills that I didn’t want to have to pay for anymore. It’s actually a really cool feeling when you can tell your friends and family that you don’t really pay for cable, telephone, or electricity anymore. The list can go on and on. Recently, I consulted with someone who lives in a state where electricity will soon be deregulated. Rates are scheduled to spike. This individual has a very tangible goal — get electricity for free. That means starting an eBook publishing business that can generate an average of around $350 per month. That means selling around 20 digital information products that are priced at $19. Is that a realistic goal? You bet!

So here’s what you should do next. Think of at least one routine monthly bill that you’re sick and tired of paying for. I’d suggest picking something like a telephone bill, a cable bill, or an electric bill. Then, set a goal of having your online business pay for that bill in the next 30 days. You’ve now established a tangible goal, and have set a time frame in which to reach that goal. Trust me, you’re now ahead of 99% of the people who are daydreaming of buying a $3 million dollar mansion. Those people will never get started because the goal is just far too lofty at this stage of their online career.
