The True Story of Free eBooks
Unedited Guest Article by Dan J. Kuschell
You’ve probably noticed how many free e-books are floating around out there in cyberspace. You might be wondering why so many people seem willing to part with hard-earned information and great ideas without receiving any payment for their efforts. What is the deal with this freebies?
It might seem strange to hand out one’ hard work “for nothing”, but a closer examination of how free e-books are actually used shows us that there is a method to the madness. And it just so happens that this particular method can be a very lucrative method.
Let me ask you something. How did you get your free information? The chances are that you were directed to the download page for the ‘freebie’ only after you signed up for a mailing list. The author or distributor was willing to hand out the goodies in exchange for having an opportunity to market to you on multiple occasions via his or her email list.

You might not feel as if you’re likely to become a buyer — no matter how many times you’re contacted. That might be true of you, but overall the system works very well. The free information is used as a way to convince people to hop on the list and, as the big names say, “the money is in the list”.
That’s only half of the story, though. Have you noticed what’s actually in some of those free books? Sure, there’s plenty of good information. There are also affiliate links. And there’s usually just enough information to wet your appetite for the bigger, more comprehensive ebook. You know, the one that isn’t free.
Free e-books, in other words, can set up future purchases in multiple ways. People will buy through those affiliate links and some of them will purchase the complete, paid product. It bears repeating, “the money is in the list”.
There’s no reason not to like the freebies. As a user, you can glean some great information. As a publisher, you can build your list while directing people to a paid alternative. Everyone wins in the process.
The great thing to take away from this system is how a smart marketer can do something beneficial for others that doesn’t cost them a dime directly AND that makes the marketer more money down the line. It shows you how approaching things with a bigger, wider perspective intact can lead to some great marketing strategies.
