Both the good news and the bad news about a full-time freelance writing career is that your income is really all up to you!
For some writers — like me — that’s exciting! For others — it’s scary! But it shouldn’t be.
Try to think of it this way. You can create the income you really want. You just have to stay focused and look at each day as another day full of opportunities to generate that income.

Unlike the worker with a regular J-O-B, you don’t need to settle for a regular monthly salary. You can decide when and how you will give yourself a raise.
Just keep in mind that payment for most writing assignments is not instant. For most freelance jobs you must complete the work first, then wait 30 days for a check to arrive. For many magazine assignments you might have to wait until your work is actually published if payment is made “upon publication.” That’s why you need to constantly plan ahead. Also, it’s best to find as many assignments as you can that pay on acceptance rather than on publication.
Take some time today to consider what bills you will have in the coming months and start planning your income.
How much money would you like to be earning within a few months?
When you’ve arrived at a definite figure, start looking for ways to generate that much money.
You CAN do it. You just need to start thinking differently. Don’t be scared. Be excited!
Try it!
