This was, as I said, a random selection. Granted, the pool of possibilities was pretty small this time around, but it was random nonetheless.

In case you want to do something similar for your blog or site, here’s how I do it:

1. Since I use WordPress, I’ve got it set up to send me an email each time someone posts a comment. The email notice contains full details of the post (date, time, name, email address, URL, the comment, etc.).
   
2. Using my email software (in this case, Thunderbird), I put each email notice in a separate folder. It’s automatically sorted by date/time, which is the way I want it. One look, and the software also tells me exactly how many emails (entries) I have in that folder.
   
3. I then go generate a random number. To do that, I use the Random.org Random Integer Generator, which is easy enough to figure out how to use.
   
4. I take that random number, go back to my email folder and count that number of messages from the top. There’s our winner!
