Work-at-Home Tip: Dress for Success

Written on December 4, 2007 – 5:05 pm | by Wordpreneur |

Probably the most difficult thing to do when first starting to work at home is getting yourself into “work mode.” After all… you’re at home!

If you’re single and living with no one else (like I was when I first started), dealing with this was easy: I was always in work mode. Doing this, essentially what you end up with is a 24/7 office practically speaking, with some amenities for eating, sleeping, showering and getting dressed.

Add even just one more person to the housing arrangement and you can throw that 24/7 office idea out the window. You’ll then predominantly be in living, not working, space.

Considering that that’s more likely than the living alone thing, pay attention: Here’s how I deal with it.

To get myself into work mode, I just dress for work. No, the suits stay in the closet, waiting for the occasional wedding or funeral… but on go the casual, laid back, yet “pro” clothing. The whole bit, top to bottom. Even if I’m not setting foot one outside the house, and really not walking much more than few short yards to get to my office. Doing this flicks the “work mode” switch to on for some reason.

The working in pajamas thing? That’s for advertisements. This is the real world. Serious work… serious clothing.

Like this post? Maybe you'd like to buy me a cuppa joe! It'll help keep me awake to write more, of course. Thanks!

Boy, was this post timely for me. I got a laptop to replace my dying desktop over the Thanksgiving holiday and started working on the couch more… which led me to working in my pajamas more… which led a total blurred line between work life and home life. I just moved the laptop to a table this week and swapped the sweats for a denim skirt which has made a huge difference.

Glad to be of help so quickly, Lesly!

Interesting thing is that the newish “pro casual” duds are actually quite comfortable, so there really is little excuse not to do it. :-)

So, if at home, what’s wrong with working 24×7 anyway?

My three ex-wives and four children I no longer see seemed to think it worked for me.

PS With apologies to my beautiful and loving wife, and incredible kids, the above is just a joke. Now, back to work!
