How to Make Money Writing!

Wordpreneur Carnival #010

Winter’s Here!Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet? Or mailing out your cards? I haven’t, and this is the last good weekend to do that. Next weekend is for bringing out the popcorn and sitting back to watch, laugh and point at the nimrods who waited too long.

The shopping part I easily handle through the gang at Amazon — I just let them deal with the logistics and hassle of getting the gifts into the recipients’ hands (and for those gifts I deliver myself, it’s the last weekend to take advantage of free Super Saver shipping). The greeting cards are a different story… getting those done and out is still roll up your sleeves work. Oh well.

Point: If you aren’t finished, you probably will want to get all that done first before moving on to this edition’s goodies. It’s just the prudent thing to do. What, you already have your gift for me all ready and squared away? Then yes, by all means, proceed!

Let’s start with probably one of the best tips I’ve read all year for b2b copywriting: Your Wow! Introduction by Carol Bentley. Even if you don’t write copy, go through this post quickly anyway since, really, Carol will show you how you can sell yourself in as few words as possible.

Here’s a short thought-provoking piece for us independent online publishers: How Long Will Your Business Survive? by Richard Lee. His message is, “If you can’t walk away from your business for 6 months and come back to find it alive and well and even having grown revenue a bit… you have no business.” So what does that means for us solo publishers of websites, ezines, blogs? Hmmm.

This one’s just for fun (in my opinion)… but it is fun… enter your blog’s URL into the How Much is Your Blog Worth? form on the Business Opportunities Weblog. You may be surprised.

OK, let’s get serious again, and there’s nothing more black-and-white serious than your site’s traffic numbers… assuming you know what they are. And with the free Google Analytics service, there’s no reason not to. In Google Analytics Goodness… Can You Believe This is Free?, Kenton Newby shows you “a few of the more useful types of data you can easily analyze once you have Analytics installed.”

Another thought-provoker this edition: business coach Terry Dean’s Quit Being a Commodity. Interesting that he used the following observation as an example (but a true one) in his post: “[M]any writers have allowed themselves to be turned into a commodity online.” And that’s not a good thing. Hmmm.

Let’s end this edition with a “how to live the dream” type piece. Interestingly, it seems that travel ranks high up many (most?) people’s to do lists. Wouldn’t it be neat if you could do that and write and make money? Thought so. Here’s a post by The Innovative Traveler’s Susan Finch who, although she forces my editor’s sensibilities to shut down to absorb the information she’s delivered, in Monetarizing Your Travel Blog actually does an excellent job of gathering and showing you travel blogger wannabe’s what your money making options are. Good stuff!

That wraps up this edition. One last thing: If you haven’t seen it, check out my recent Sharing: 5 Ideas post… particularly the comments and additional suggestions that appear at the bottom from your fellow wordpreneurs.

See you back here next weekend!
