Wordpreneur Carnival #008

Posted on 02 December 2007 by Wordpreneur

Sorry for the slight delay getting this edition out folks… spent the last couple of days writing — the type that gets me pretty much oblivious to everything going on around me — but fortunately I snapped out of it enough this morning to finish and get this installment out. Enjoy!

By the way, I’m wondering: Would you prefer that I release these carnival issues on Sundays instead of their regular Saturdays? The benefit from the change would mainly be for the subscribers of the email feed, who’ll then get their email notifications on Monday instead of Sunday. Thoughts?

And we’re off…

If you’re selling anything online and have time to read only one recommended post this edition, make it this one: James Aleantal’s Why Pretty Sites Don’t Sell in his Conversion Rate Clinic. Very quick read, but it’s a must. (POP QUIZ: What are the 3 reasons folks go on the Web? Read the article and find out.)

I take it back. I think this had better be a must-read also. With Google AdSense playing a big role in a lot of our online monetization efforts, Stuart Brown shows us a bit of the thinking underneath his attempts at Balancing AdSense With User Experience (basically, “to increase earnings while maximising user experience”) in his Modern Life blog.

On a more technical note… Feedburner, as you all probably know, is one of those services-bloggers-can’t-do-without what with it making it easier (relatively) for readers to subscribe to our blog’s RSS feeds. And it’s free. But what if you don’t want to use it and would rather ”roll your own,” so to speak? Here’s a good place to start for you WordPress users: How to Assemble a Feedburner Alternative Using WordPress Plugins by Samir Bharadwaj. Even if you don’t use WordPress, the post may give a you good overview of what you’ll need to do (and find) for your own blogging platform.

In the building traffic to your site department: Check out JerkyBeef’s 3 Ways to Increase Your Blog Stats in The Beef Jerky Blog. Short post. The third tip you likely already know, but pay close attention to the first two. Trickier techier stuff. Personally making a mental note to revisit and explore, analyze, and most likely try these tips further.

If you’re in the mood for a tad less light reading and bit more of cranial exercising, you’ll want to check out Jeff Gomez’s book, Print is Dead. Before you do so, you may want to check out Joe Wikert’s review in his Publishing 2020 blog.

OK, before we go, let’s devote at least some ink to a more pro writing-related post. Like Ben Yoskovitz’s 14 Tips for Moving from Full-Time to Freelance Work in his Instigator Blog. Number 7 is an absolute must; besides, they’re so cheap, I can’t figure out why freelancers (or anybody else, for that matter) need to be reminded to do it. But they do. You do. Here’s the reminder.

That wraps it up for this edition, folks. Hope you all had a really wonderful weekend (I just won a pound of beef jerky on eBay… woo hoo!), and see you all next week!

    Another excellent edition! Kudos Eldon!

Would you consider doing these reviews and recommendations through out the week as regular individual posts and not just as carnival entries? You’re barely tapping what’s out there and I really do like your take on things. :-) Pretty please?

Thank you Kim. Glad you’re enjoying the carnivals. Your suggestion is definitely something to think about. I’ll consider it.
