Wordpreneur Carnival #005

Written on November 10, 2007 – 2:59 pm | by Wordpreneur |

Before we begin, for those of you who’ve been wondering: No, I do not run all the carnival submissions I receive. In fact, I run very few of them. Most are articles and posts I find myself.

Why not? Besides the fact that I try to limit the total number of features to only what I think are the most useful of the current crop of submissions and finds (we really are blessed today with access to a huge amount of information to sift through), two big reasons. One, I naturally tend to like submissions from the same sources, but I’ve also got an informal rule of wanting to expose you to as many different blogs and sites out there… doesn’t mean I won’t feature posts again from blogs/sites/writers already featured previously, but the intent is to minimize that as much as possible.

And two: It doesn’t look like a lot of submitters have read The One Thing to Do to Improve Your Queries and Proposals. Nothing’s changed with the percentages I reported (they seem to have gotten worse, actually). One guy, for example, has been submitting something like three decently written but no-way-no-how-for-Wordpreneur posts each week since day one… I wonder when these folks will notice that nothing of theirs has “made it to print” yet.

This isn’t even a paying market! Imagine what the for-pays have to deal with. C’est la vie, I guess.

And off we go…

Getting paid for blogging is a relatively new thing in the freelance writing marketplace, so lots of us don’t really know how much to charge (or expect to make) doing this. Khalid Hajsaleh in the Invesp Blog explains quite clearly the factors and thinking that go into the rates they offer bloggers (yes, they’re seeking, or was) in his post, How Much Should You Pay for a Freelance Blogger?

Since we’re on the topic of blogging, take a look at 10 Forums to Make You a Better Blogger by Fred Peters (Newest on the Net). The objective is to pick a few to actively participate in so you can help, be helped, and get known in the community. I don’t do it… but I’m now thinking of making time for it.

Now for getting massive traffic: StumbleUpon is another major source of social viral traffic, and The Ultimate Guide to Leveraging StumbleUpon by Daily Moolah’s Dev Basu is an absolute must read.

Be forewarned: The traffic generating method DayJobNuker describes in his How I Made My First $2,000 in Affiliate Marketing: A Step-by-Step Guide is not within the rules, so to speak, but the bulk of his “business plan” is very much above board and worth learning. Don’t worry — the title just makes the post sound longer than it really is.

Copywriter and freelance writer Susan Johnston does make an interesting point in her blog, The Urban Muse, for Weekend Networking and forging relationships with editors, writers and, of course, potential clients. She also teaches us a tech-enabled “easy way to network and share info” tip that helps greatly in this area!

And, let’s wrap up this edition with a good-to-bookmark-for-when-you-may-need-the-info post, Just What is a Work for Hire? A Freelancer’s Primer. By freelance writer and media consultant Thursday Bram, she says that it’s part of a series she’s working on that explains Work for Hire contracts.

See you next carnival!

Thanks for dropping by Khalid. Is Invesp still looking for freelance bloggers/Web copywriters? If memory serves, that post on the subject I saw on your site was dated way back in July.
