Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2007
If you’re looking for basic accounting software for your freelance writing business, the latest version of Microsoft Office Accounting Express may fit the bill if you’re a Windows user.
I’ve never used it — I’ve been an Intuit Quickbooks user for years, since its very first MS-DOS version (MS-DOS, hehe, now that brings back memories) — so can’t really tell you if it’s good or bad.
It’s free though (they hope you’ll like it enough to move up to the not-free Pro version) so go check it out yourself and let the rest of us know what you think.
Here’s a list of its features. Looks like the basics are covered:
- Double entry accrual accounting
- Cash basis accounting
- Setup Wizard
- Multi-level chart of accounts and general ledger
- Accounts receivable and accounts payable
- Invoicing, bill payments, and returns
- Audit trail and change tracking
- Financial reports
- Rich form customization
- Role-based security
- Backup and restore with data compression

I’ve used this software. If you have less than 1GB of available RAM (and that’s after you have all your usual applications open), don’t get this. It’s RAM heavy and will suck the brains out of your computer faster than the kiss of death. Expect freezes and crashes.
If you’re looking for a good accounting software that does it all (even works in multiple currencies, a must for online work), get Quickbooks. The investment of between $100 to $300 is tax deductible as a business expense as well as being a one-time expense, and long-term, it’s well worth the money.
It’s also “accounting for dummies.” You don’t need to know much about what you’re doing to run this software. Basic math, a general idea… voila.
Free is good, yes. But free doesn’t always mean better.
