Getting Paid
Just a quick tip for those of you who may need it. There are really only two things you need to do to help ensure that you will get paid for the freelance work you do, and that you’ll get paid on time:
1. Get the whole deal down in writing. In detail. If you take this to mean you must have a very explicit signed contract — ding ding ding ding ding!
2. Ask beforehand who is ultimately responsible for paying you and “cutting your check.” Your editor? The accounting department? The publisher? The publisher’s stepson’s wife moonlighting as the magazine’s bookkeeper? Whoever, get the contact information and immediately send your invoice upon completion of your work, copying anyone you feel needs to be CC:’d (e.g, editor for approval).
Be nice and polite but serious, prompt and business-like. Which is the point… you want them to know that no way no how are you wishy-washy about about requiring you be paid promptly as agreed upon.
