Freelance Writing: To Do #1

Written on October 9, 2007 – 6:45 pm | by Wordpreneur |

Getting started in the exciting world of freelance writing? Here’s the very first thing you probably should do.

Study the markets

Yup, that’s it, explore what’s out there. Who’s publishing what? What do they need? How much do they pay?

Although finding specific markets to try for is obviously a good thing, your objective at this stage should probably revolve more around getting a “feel” for the markets, see which ones you may be better suited for, and more specifically, figure out what will be required of you to break in.

At only $3.99 a month, my favorite tool for doing this sort of thing is the WritersMarket.com website. But at this stage of your career, save your cash if you can. Go to your local public library, look for and browse through the following directories:

These will keep you busy. I bet you’ll be surprised what you’ll find.

This also happens to be one of my favorite ways of generating ideas for articles and projects, by the way.

Like this post? Maybe you'd like to buy me a cuppa joe! It'll help keep me awake to write more, of course. Thanks!
