Dumb Mistake… Fixed
I was on the golf course the other day — fortunately enough a place I’ve been able to frequent the occasional weekday on top of my usual weekenders — and I was doubly fortunate to be put in a foursome that included a very pleasant married couple. Funny conversationalists with adequate game, it made for a nice few hours.
It also didn’t hurt at all that the guy, it turned out, owned and ran a successful local business. But even better: He seemed genuinely interested in hearing about what I did, and learning more about my services, particularly the ones that revolved around developing and running a blog.
Golf and business do mix very well. And this was a textbook case study example of this in action…
…until that point when he asked me for a business card. I didn’t have one. Worse, and the really dumb part, I not only knew for weeks that I was out of cards after using up my last one, I also knew exactly where to get a batch easily, quickly and for dirt cheap.
But I never got around to it, since I did practically all my trolling for work online. I figured it could wait.
Well, it didn’t. I should have known by now that opportunities do pop up when you least expect them to. So, instead of being able to leave this prospect with a very capable, very professional memory and impression of me, I left him with an embarrassing, clumsy mental image of me fumbling around for a pen and a place to write a phone number and whatever other contact and useful information I could fit (I eventually wrote what I could on a skuzzy used golfcard that he’ll probably end up chucking out accidentally).
Not that this business prospect is lost. It could be. And maybe I still have a chance. But what’s gone is my damned nice first impression.
I hate it when that happens. And all because I didn’t have a freaking business card that’s so easy and cheap to design and order through VistaPrint (way smarter and cheaper than doing it yourself in-house with your inkjet).
And it’s not like they’re the only business card printers around. I don’t care where you get your cards — VistaPrint or your local printshop — get them. And always keep a good supply handy.
You can bet I’ll never be caught without them again.

Thanks Craig. And no, I haven’t been contacted yet. Looks like I’ll have to take the initiative. So what else is new…

Wow! What you didn’t tell us, E-Man, is that you now have a way to WRITE OFF your golf outings as a marketing expense. Sweet.
