Digging for Article and Book Ideas

Written on October 12, 2007 – 8:17 pm | by Wordpreneur |

Want a seemingly endless source of freelance article — or even book — ideas? That’s too easy. How about one that also tells you how popular the “idea” is to readers? Now I’ve got your interest. Clincher: It’s also totally free.

Here you go: Just go on over to Digg. If you haven’t heard of it yet, it’s one of those popular “social networking” sites you keep hearing about. Digg’s users just happen to share “content” with each other… when you see an interesting blog post or article, you put up its link and a description on Digg, and the other Digg users vote on whether they “digg” it or not. Lots of diggs, and good things happen.

Although Digg used to be predominantly technology and science articles, it has since expanded its subject and category coverage, so there’s a better than even chance you’ll find stuff there that’ll be right up your alley.

Here’s how it can be used for idea research:

  1. Go to Digg.
  2. In the search form (upper right corner), enter a keyword or phrase.
  3. Digg gives you matching articles, sorted by rating (number of diggs), highest first.

That’s it. The thinking at work here is that, the higher the number of diggs, the higher your chances of finding a paying market for a related article.

Believe me, you’ll have fun exploring what Digg gives you.

While we’re on the subject, if there’s anything on Wordpreneur that you “digg,” at the bottom of every post (look down) you’ll find a link that says Share This. Clicking on it lets you easily share the post you like on Digg (and many other social network sites) by automating a lot of the submission process… such as auto-submitting URLs, etc., to your network of choice.

Enjoy!
