Personalize It
Having difficulty coming up with ideas for your articles? Maybe you’re feeling something like what a prospective contributor did, when he said, and I paraphrase:
“I don’t know what to contribute. There are so many books, magazines and websites that already cover the subject, anything I say would be redundant.”
He does have a point. But it isn’t a new point.
Here’s a little secret: As far as information goes, most everything available IS redundant. Precious little “original” stuff around. And the information your writing will deliver will very likely not be original…
…unless you realize the one thing that can’t be duplicated: YOU.
Let’s face it: As a “reader,” I can go anywhere to get tips and advice on how to hit a golf ball, how to sell my art and writing, how to stay healthy, etcetera etcetera etcetera… anywhere. Worse. Everywhere.
But where do I go to read about how you hit a golf ball? How you sell your art and writing? How you stay healthy? How you etcetera etcetera etcetera?
You get the point.
Or do you? Maybe you’re thinking, “Yeah, but so what? I do it exactly the same way everybody else does!”
Well, that’s great news… good chance then that whatever you’re doing, you’re doing right. But are they all really doing it exactly the same way you’re doing it?
Take the golf swing thing. Is “everybody else” swinging:
- with exactly the same brand and model golf club?
- with exactly same brand and model golf ball?
- at exactly the same day of the week you play?
- at exactly the same time of the day?
- at exactly the same golf course?
- against exactly the same people?
- with exactly the same years of playing experience you do?
- with exactly the same handicap you do?
- with exactly the same rate of success (or failure)?
- or even, heck, with the same exact hairstyle?
That’s 10 possible personalized article ideas without thinking too hard. Granted, some are silly and useless in the grand scheme of things… or are they? As the writer, you control and determine where the idea goes.
The best part: This is what readers are really looking for, whether they realize it or not. You give them information, they’ll just thank you. But show them signs of life, give them something real, and don’t be surprised if they fall in love with you.
Bottom line: You want them coming back to you? Personalize it.
